Sean and Kathy took us out on their friends Riviera, the Pog Mo Thoin. Present were Alan, UniServity clients from the UK Sue and Tony, Kathy's friend Lu Lu and Phil. Sean picked us up in Darling Harbour just in front of Nicks and took us up to Manly. We came back down and moored outside Kingsleys, a restaurant in the same building complex as Russell Crows apartment, for lunch. I had a $50, one kilogram T-bone for lunch. After lunch we went up the Parramatta River to Olympic Park and then Sean dropped us back at Darling Harbour.

This little affair took place with I was doing some consultancy in Canberra. Axel and Elaine took me out for dinner at a restaurant which I think was called Café Canberra. It is a poorly kept secret that when challenged to an eating competition I don’t turn it down. I’ve just watched the popular movie ‘Troy’ and I am reminded that courage is not accepting the challenge which you know you will win, but accepting the challenge which you know you will loose. Historically speaking, this has shown me up as the confidence man that I am. The Oyster Eating Competition? No competition whatsoever. The Nugget Challenge? It made me laugh. The Chinese Challenge, the Kilo T-Bone, the Sandwich Challenge, the Burger King Challenge, the $5 Steak Challenge… Yawn, yawn, yawn. Victory, victory, victory.

All of these I have won and all I have known I would win. The night of the Mixed Grill, however, was the night I earned my stripes. Axel challenged me to take on the mixed grill and in a much appreciated show of camaraderie, offered to stand beside me. The Mixed Grill contained seven different cuts of meat and more food than I would normally eat in a week of dinners. Aside from the meat, veg and chips that you can see on the plates there was also a bowl of salad on the side. It was a ridiculous amount of food and I didn’t want to take it on.

On this occasion I failed the challenge.

I did my best but when I was done there were still some vegies on my plate. This was the first time I’ve experienced a protein headache and I won’t complain if it is my last. I didn’t eat the next day and despite having an empty belly I didn’t feel like I needed to eat for about three days afterwards. I think it proves though, that when you are talking about brave men and you mention the names of Hector and Achilles, perhaps you would be well served to mention the name of Ph

According to my passport we flew out on Feb 24, 2000. We landed in LA, took a bus to Las Vegas. We left Vegas with more money then we arrived. Flew to Breckenridge, Colorado, to catch up with Hayley. Flew to New York for a conference. Caught a train to Washington and then flew home. These are the only photos I have at the moment but Matty has promised me he will give me copies of the others. I think Dad has a copy of my travel report. I’ll see if I can track that down as well.
